"In diplomacy, as you know, we don't get instant replies when we have these kinds of dialogue," he said. "I'm sure the president is seriously considering the exchange we had."
The White House also said Negroponte's personal diplomacy had served a purpose.
"Deputy Secretary Negroponte reiterated President Bush's position on the need for the state of emergency to be lifted and other actions to be taken," said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the White House National Security Council. "We are confident that President Musharraf will take this into account as he leads his country back to the democratic path."
